Music Theory Training
This course is designed to prepare Certificate of Merit students and Carnegie Hall Royal Conservatory Achievement Program students for their theory exams, however, students do not have to be enrolled in Inspire Academy classes to take this class.
Music theory is the more analytical, structural side of music. We recommend that students study theory in a separate class environment, which allows them time to focus on the musical concepts and learn them in depth. Our students receive scores of 93% and above on CM theory exams.
About the Course
The ultimate goal of a music theory course is to develop the student's ability to recognize, understand, and describe the basic materials and processes of music that are heard or presented in a music score. The achievement of these goals is best approached by initially addressing fundamental, aural, analytical, and compositional skills using both listening and written exercises.
Building on this foundation, the course will progress to include more creative tasks, such as the harmonization of a melody by selecting appropriate chords, composing a musical bass line to provide two-voice counterpoint or the realization of figured-bass notation.
Eventually the students understand music better because they have acquired a solid foundation. The students are able to pass music theory exams more successfully and enjoy the experience of making music all their lives.
